Wise, Cyclones earn All-Big 12 honors

IRVING, Texas – The Iowa State women’s basketball team placed five student-athletes on the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 team. The Cyclones’ Maddie Frederick, Ashley Joens, Morgan Kane, Kristin Scott and Madison Wise, a Greenfield-Central gradaute, were all named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team.

Wise earned her third appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 First-Team. The senior marketing major, appeared in all 28 games for the Cyclones and averaged 4.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor. Wise was also the only player in the Big 12 to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second-team members have a GPA of 3.00 or better.

Bulmahn named MVC Freshman of the Year

Freshman setter Victoria Bulmahn became the first Valparaiso University volleyball player to earn a major award in her rookie season since the program joined the Missouri Valley Conference.

She was named the MVC Freshman of the Year on Wednesday.

Bulmahn, a Mt. Vernon graduate, earned the Freshman of the Year award, as well as a spot on the MVC All-Freshman Team.

A three-time Freshman of the Week honoree this season, Bulmahn currently leads the MVC and ranks 24th nationally with 10.84 assists/set, second-most among all D-I freshmen. Valpo’s offense has averaged 13.22 kills/set in MVC play this spring, its highest total since joining the conference.

Also strong in the back row, Bulmahn ranks second on the team and 12th in the MVC with 3.57 digs/set and has been in double figures in digs 14 times.

Bulmahn is Valpo’s first Freshman of the Year since joining the MVC, as a Valpo rookie last earned a Newcomer of the Year honor in 2009 when Taylor Root was the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.

IBCA to honor four hoops contributors

Four Indiana high school coaches will receive special awards from the Indiana Basketball Association in 2021.

Lawrenceburg boys basketball assistant coach Steve Bradley and Brownsburg girls head coach Debbie Smiley each will be recognized with a Point Guard College Transformational Coach Award as presented by the IBCA.

In addition, Edinburgh boys basketball assistant Jim Higdon and Penn girls basketball assistant Hassan Abdullah will receive awards as IBCA Assistant Coaches of the Year.

This is the fifth year for the PGC Transformation Coach Awards, which are presented to coaches who have impacted the lives of their players and fellow coaches at their school and within their community.

The recipients are coaches who are respected by their players and fellow coaches for their dedication, positive approach and integrity on and off the court. Point Guard College is a corporate partner of the IBCA.
