Wise, Cyclones advance in NCAA Women’s Tournament

Greenfield-Central graduate Madison Wise recorded a double-double for the victorious Iowa State Cyclones on Monday in San Antonio, Texas, during the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The seventh-seeded Cyclones (17-10) defeated 10th seed Michigan State 79-75 to advance into the Round of 32 with a matchup vs. No. 2 seed Texas A&M today at 6 p.m. (ESPN2).

The Cyclones received a major boost off the bench from Wise, who tallied her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Michigan State. She was 5 of 7 from the field.

Iowa State advances to the second round for the 12th time in school history. Iowa State also advanced to the Round of 32 in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, having done so in 2018-19. ISU is 19-18 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

Royals softball conducting fundraising campaign

The 2021 Eastern Hancock softball team is conducting an online fundraiser to help provide a higher-quality experience for all student-athlete participants. 

The team is asking for donations that will go towards equipment, fees and travel costs. Donation amounts range from $20-$1,000. 

The team is attempting to raise $7,000 as a group of 25 members. The fundraiser has netted $6,720 as of Tuesday morning. The campaign will run through April 1. 

To donate and support the EH softball program, contact head coach Terry Stephens, a member of the varsity softball program or the athletics office at Eastern Hancock High School for a direct link to the team’s online donation page.

Hinkle to host college slam dunk & 3-point contests

INDIANAPOLIS – The 32nd annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships will take place at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler University campus in Indianapolis on Thursday, April 1 at 9 p.m.

The event will feature some of the country’s top 3-point specialists and high-flying dunkers to help kick off college basketball’s national championship weekend.

It will be the third time Hinkle Fieldhouse has hosted the event, having done so previously in 2006 and 2015. This year’s event will be closed to the public, but fans can watch the action live on ESPN2 beginning at 9 p.m.

Seniors dominate IBCA weekly honorees list

On Saturday, eight different teams punched their ticket to the IHSAA boys basketball state finals. As a result, three young men have been awarded the Week-20 IBCA Player of the Week honor for their respective districts.

Kouts senior Cale Wireman, Lawrence North senior Shamar Avance, and Barr-Reeve senior Curt Hopf are the winners for Mar.15-20 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Wireman takes home honors in District-1. Avance was awarded for his play in Disrict-2. Hopf is the recipient for the second time in District-3.
