All-HHC boys basketball team announced

Twelve players, including two from Delta and three from Mt. Vernon, the HHC co-champions, were named to the 2020-21 All-Hoosier Heritage Conference boys basketball team.

The team is chosen by a vote of the eight conference coaches.

The team features 11 of the league’s top-12 scorers, including leading scorer and rebounder Brady Hunt of Delta (21.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and assists leader Blaine Nunnally of New Palestine (4.2 apg).

Nine of the 12 players were underclassmen, with Hunt, New Castle’s Cole McDaniel and Shelbyville’s Mitch Yeend the three seniors.

Mt. Vernon’s Ben Rhoades was named Coach of the Year.

Dragons split track season opener

The New Palestine track and field teams opened their season Tuesday with a dual meet against Yorktown at Kelso Stadium.

The Dragon girls won 72-58. The Dragon boys fell 82-50.

Winners for the Dragon girls were Sydney Miller in shot put and discus, Emily Hunter in the 100-meter hurdles, Lexi Baynes in the 400, Courtney Study in the 800, Emily Adam in the 1,600 and Kendall Mann in the 3,200. The 3,200 relay team of Adam, Megan Collins, Emma Mann and Kendall Mann also won.

For the Dragon boys, Nick Bastian won the long jump, Tucker Keevers the shot put, Richard Clevenger the discus and Wes Jewell the 400.

The Dragons compete next on March 18 at home against Connersville.

Marauders open girls track season strong

The Mt. Vernon girls track team had a hot start during its season opener, winning 6 of the 11 contested events at Lawrence Central on Wednesday night.

The meet was unscored due to the 200-meter, 400, 800, 3,200 and discus being uncontested, but the Marauders held the upper hand by a small margin 39-38 over the host Bears.

Scorers for the Marauders included: Riley Nielsen (1st in pole vault); Mariam Konate (3rd in long jump); Morgan Tharp, Lydia Carrell, Emma Gasiorek, Alex Overshiner (1st in 3,200 relay); Anna Stanfield (1st in 100 hurdles); Raelyn Stanfield (2nd in 100 hurdles); Tharp (1st in 1,600); Carrell (2nd in 1,600); Allie Jenson (3rd in 1,600); Anna Stanfield (1st in 300 hurdles); Raelyn Stanfield (3rd in 300 hurdles); Tharp, Gasiorek, Overshiner, Maddie Butterly (1st in 1,600 relay).

Mya Eppert, Nielsen, Morgan Kille and Konate placed second in the 400 relay, running the fastest time in program history since 2016.
