The Mt. Vernon girls soccer team rebounded quickly from its disappointing weekend loss with a 4-0 shutout victory over Class 3A No. 12 Fishers on Monday night.

The Marauders broke a scoreless tie in the second half with four unanswered goals to defeat the visiting Tigers. Shay Shipley posted a pair of second-half goals, and Anna Isger added two more goals and an assist.

Riley Britt recorded the shutout victory in goal for the Marauders. The defense of Maddie Swingle, Ellie Gawrys, Macy Wilson, Bri Hale, Taylor Bostic and Katie Gawrys limited Fishers to only one shot.

The Marauders lost to Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Yorktown 1-0 on Saturday, marking the program’s first league loss since 2017. Their 18-game HHC winning streak was also broken in the process.

Mt. Vernon is now 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in the HHC standings behind Yorktown (4-0 HHC). The Marauders next match is Thursday at 3A No. 3 Hamilton Southeastern.

Cougars shut out Woodmen

The Greenfield-Central girls soccer team evened up its season record Monday night with a 2-0 victory over host Greenwood.

The win moves the Cougars’ record to 4-4-1 on the season with seven more games to play.

Greenfield-Central controlled possession throughout the game Monday, forcing Greenwood to play aggressively.

The Cougars remained composed and countered by moving the ball around well.

Both goals were scored by Kelsi McLaughlin, with assists from Kambell Trapp and Cora Bishop.

The goalkeeper tandem of Hannah Skene and Jessica Merritt silenced the Woodmen for the shutout.

The defense led by Zuleny Calderon, Kalyn Moss, Courtney Vaughn, Kennedy Trapp, Jorja Houston and Paisley Slunaker kept Greenwood at bay.

Cross Country

Cougars lose close race with Oldenburg

The Greenfield-Central boys cross-country team ran against Morristown and Oldenburg Academy on Monday.

The Cougars had five runners finish in the top 10 to take second as a team, losing by one point to Oldenburg 27-28.

Senior Tyler Osborn was the Cougars’ top finisher at second overall in 18 minutes, 17 seconds.

Freshman Matt Parker was fourth in 18:29. Freshman Liam Flanagan was fifth in 19:00. Sophomore Devin Evanoff was seventh in 19:13. The final scorer for the Cougars was freshman Elliot Ryba in 10th running in 19:29.

Freshman Sam Houston was 12th in 20:12, followed by classmates Thomas Ryba in 13th (20:32) and Colin Eddington in 14th (21:12).

Cougars win four-way race

The Greenfield-Central girls cross-country team traveled to Morristown on Monday and won its four-way meet with 15 points.

Olivia Wahl led the Cougars with a first-place run. Shelby Hoffman was second, followed by Ava Grass in third. Maddy King was fourth, and Josie Joyner was fifth.

Reagan McDonald placed sixth. Margaret McPherson was seventh.

Boys Tennis

Cougars defeat Golden Bears

The Greenfield-Central boys tennis team improved its HHC record to 3-2 with a 4-1 victory over Shelbyville at home on Monday.

The Cougars are now 8-3 on the season.

Carson Gibson won at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3. Robbie Dye was victorious at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0. Matt Hyre won 6-1, 7-5 at three singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Garrett Neumeister and Nick Grandstaff won 6-2, 6-2.

The county champion JV team tied Shelbyville 4-4. Winners were Chris Long, CJ Michalek and Caden Robertson. The JV team is now 9-1-1 on the season.

Dragons slay Arabians

The New Palestine boys tennis team swept HHC rival Pendleton Heights 5-0 Monday at home.

Two days after winning the individual county title, Ezra Schwier continued his strong play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles.

Ethan Haeberle won 6-0, 6-1 and Caleb Davis 6-1, 6-3. At doubles, Will Au/Clayton Wesley won 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Jackson Havel/Zayden Stiller won 6-0, 6-1.

The Dragon JV won 4-1. Zach Au (6-1), Brandon Sego (6-3), Eli Sloan/Messiah Kent-Brooks (6-1) and Devon Bird/Evan Sleuth all won (6-4).

Volleyball

Dragons sweep Warriors

The New Palestine volleyball team posted an impressive 25-18, 25-5, 25-9 road victory over Whiteland on Monday.

Kennedy Stephenson had six kills on seven attempts to lead the Dragons’ offense. Kaelyn Armstrong added eight kills and five digs. Jesi Hall added five kills and Liv Ellis four. Sarah Adam had 22 assists.

Rachel Popp had 11 digs and three aces. Trinity Oertel added four aces and five digs. Grace Myers tallied 10 digs.

“Whiteland came out fired up and played a really good first set. We made a few too many errors in the first set but played really well in sets two and three,” Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. “Keeping a team at five points or under is very difficult. The team is playing really good right now, and we are ready for our tough conference matches this week.”

Girls Golf

Dragons shoot season-best score

The New Palestine golf team shot a season-best score Monday at Fall Creek Golf Course, but fell 172-181 to HHC foe Pendleton Heights.

Megan Diller led the way for the Dragons with a 42, including an eagle on the par-5 third hole. It was the Dragons’ second eagle of the season, as Zoe Nelson shot one last week.

Nelson added a season-best 45 against the Arabians. Hanna Beller and Michaela Purnell each shot 47s. Ava Hasecuster added a season-best 48.

Cougars beat Marauders, Warriors

The Greenfield-Central girls golf team kept its momentum going, defeating Mt. Vernon and Warren Central on Monday.

Two days after winning the HHC team title, the Cougars shot a 175 to best Mt. Vernon’s tally of 184.

Caroline Gibson earned medalist honors with a 37 for Greenfield-Central. Tandess O’Neal shot a 45, and Sydnie Wherry carded a 46. Katie Curry fired a 47.

Mt. Vernon was led by Alaina Nugent with a 39.

The Cougars are now 15-1 in nine-hole matches this season and end the regular season on Thursday at Shelbyville.
