INDIANAPOLIS — Greenfield-Central girls swimming coach Emily Logan considers senior Megan Coffin a torchbearer for her program, one who has helped take the Cougars to a higher plane both on the club and high school levels.

On Saturday, Coffin wrapped up her prep career with a pair of swims during the state meet at the IU Natatorium. The senior placed 13th in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 57.37 seconds in the consolation final, and then added a 12th-place showing in the 100 breaststroke, hitting the wall in 1:05.07.

“I’m very pleased with how today went with everything,” Coffin said as the meet came to a close. “I know I didn’t drop time (from Friday to Saturday), but it’s still the experience of coming back and swimming again.”

Coffin’s efforts landed the Cougars 31st in the team standings with nine points. Her breaststroke time of 1:04.67 in the preliminaries was just .07 seconds off the school record, one that Logan said Coffin had been chasing “since she was a little kid.”

Despite falling short on that front, Coffin leaves an impressive legacy behind at G-C, where her name will still be on the record board in five different events and her impact has gone well beyond the times she’s put up.

“She’s just great overall for the sport, especially at our school,” Logan said. “She’s energetic and has a good time; the kids look up to her a lot and the younger ones coming up, they watch how she trains. She’s been probably our first girl starting to get to those elite levels with club swimming and that kind of thing, so that’s been really exciting.”

Coffin will continue her swimming career in college, although she’s not quite sure where just yet — “it’s complicated,” she said Saturday. But no matter where she lands, she’ll look back upon her years at Greenfield-Central fondly.

“I feel very blessed to be on a team like this the past four years,” Coffin said. “I have amazing coaches that believed in me and coached me to be the best I could be. I have amazing teammates that always pushed me to just go faster at practice and then cheer me on at every meet.”
