HANCOCK COUNTY — A couple with a history of recent drug convictions were arrested and charged with multiple felony drug crimes after a traffic stop and a fight with police.

Sarah Elizabeth Johnson, 21; and Adam L Kendall, 36, both of Greenfield, were taken into custody after police stopped their car for a traffic violation and found methamphetamine and drug-related equipment.

Kendall, who fought with officers when asked to get out of the car, had to be shot with a stun gun several times, a probable cause affidavit said.

He has been charged with nine crimes: a Level 2 felony count of dealing meth; a Level 3 felony count of possession of meth; two Level 6 felony charges of battery against a public safety official; a Level 6 felony for obstruction of justice; a Level 6 felony for possession of a controlled substance; and three misdemeanor charges for drugs and resisting law enforcement.

Johnson has been charged with six crimes: a Level 2 felony count of aiding, inducing or causing an offense: dealing in meth; a Level 4 felony county of possession of meth; a Level 6 felony of maintaining a common nuisance; and three misdemeanor drug charges.

According to the affidavit, the couple was pulled over Friday near Longfellow Drive and State Road 9 on the south side of Greenfield after a Greenfield Police Department officer noticed their car was missing a licence plate light.

Upon talking with Johnson, who was driving, officers thought she and the passenger, Kendall, were acting suspiciously.

When officers asked Kendall to get out of the car, he resisted and started fighting the officers. Kendall was hit with a stun gun once, but it had no effect, so he was hit again, the affidavit said.

Kendall, however, continued to fight but soon was subdued, the affidavit said.

None of the officers was injured.

A search of the vehicle turned up a quantity of methamphetamine; scales; and five pills identified as alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax. Police also found a wooden container with a substance officers identified as marijuana.

The crystalline material in the car weighed approximately 21 grams.

Kendall had an initial hearing Monday, Feb. 3, in Hancock County Circuit Court in front of Judge Scott Sirk, who set a $10,000 cash bond. Johnson also appeared Monday before Sirk, who set a $5,000 cash bond. Sirk entered not-guilty pleas for both. They have pretrial conferences set for early March.

Johnson had been sentenced on Jan. 23 to a four-year term for a Level 4 felony charge of possession of meth. But all but about three weeks of the sentence was suspended.

In March 2019, Kendall received a 365-day sentence for possession of a synthetic drug. All of that time was suspended.
