Two motorcycle riders airlifted following serious accident on U.S. 40

HANCOCK COUNTY – Two motorcycle riders were airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital following a crash with a minivan in Hancock County Saturday afternoon. Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Greenfield Fire Territory and Charlottesville Fire Department responded to a report of a serious crash involving two motorcycles in the 9200 block of East U.S. 40 around 4:30 p.m. Emergency personnel arriving on the scene began to render aid and requested a response by the FACT Team due to the serious injuries to the motorcyclist involved.

The crash involved a Chrysler minivan traveling westbound on U.S. 40 in the right lane, and two stopped motorcycles along the edge of the roadway. As the Chrylser continued westbound, the vehicle sideswiped the two motorcycles stopped along the roadway edge. The motorcyclist on each bike sustained injuries from the collision.

The motorcyclist of the first Honda motorcycle, Lorin Smith, 53, Indianapolis, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. The motorcyclist of the second Honda motorcycle, Tina Smith, 50, Indianapolis, also sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital. At this time, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is continuing the investigation to determine the circumstances involved in the collision.

The driver of the Chrysler Minivan, Amanda Carton, 39, Knightstown, was not injured in the crash. Carton was cooperative with officers and provided information related to the collision, chief deputy of the Sheriff’s Department, Maj. Robert Campbell said in a press release.
