WILKINSON — A fire destroyed a barn near Wilkinson on Tuesday, but not until after all of its pigs safely escaped.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze in the 7900 block of East County Road 600N at around 4:40 p.m.

Dave Lacy, who lives at the property, said he was burning timber near a small hut that was near the barn. The hut caught on fire, he continued, adding he tried to douse the flames with a hose before they could spread.

A lean-to off one of the barn’s sides near the hut caught fire next, Lacy said.

“Then it just took off,” he said.

D.B. Bowman, chief of the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Department, said the barn was engulfed upon firefighters’ arrival.

“An old barn like that, it doesn’t take much to get it,” he said.

Lacy said the barn was built in 1957.

Four pigs were on the opposite side of the barn where the fire started. Lacy said his children show the animals in 4-H.

Firefighters from Wilkinson, Shirley, Green Township, Greenfield, Knightstown and Greensboro (Henry County) also responded.
