MCCORDSVILLE — The February shooting death of a teenage girl has been ruled an accident after an investigation by a coroner.

Armoni “Moni” Cameron, 13, McCordsville, died Feb. 9 due to an accidental gunshot wound to the head, Hamilton County Coroner John Chalfin said Thursday.

Officials from the McCordsville Police Department, who are handling the investigation, declined to comment. Paul Casey, acting chief of police, said in an email to the Daily Reporter that the case is still open and under investigation pending Indiana State Police lab results.

First-responders were called to a home in the 5500 block of Vistaview Trail on the afternoon of Feb. 9, where they found the girl unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, according to a police report. The home is in the Emerald Springs subdivision off Mt. Comfort Road.

The person who called 911 told the operator the girl had accidentally shot herself, the report said.

Details about the incident have not been released, but a search warrant issued two days after the shooting indicated the weapon was a 9 mm Glock handgun that had been fired once, apparently in a closet in a bedroom.

Armoni was enrolled at Stonybrook Middle School in Warren Township in Indianapolis. While she was identified as living in McCordsville at the time of her death, she was formerly from East Chicago, according to an obituary.

According to the obituary, she was the daughter of LaToya Scott and Brandon Cameron. She had four sisters and one brother.

The family held the funeral services Feb. 18 in Gary.
