GREENFIELD — A department store on Greenfield’s busy retail corridor will close in coming weeks, but a new retailer owned by the same company will take its place.

Goody’s, a family clothing and household goods store at 1659 N. State St., will shutter its doors in late February, said Brian Hybiak, vice president of Texas-based Stage Stores Inc., which owns Goody’s. By mid-March, the store will open as Gordmans, a Midwest-based off-price chain store specializing in home goods and decor, Hybiak said.

Stage Stores owns several similar chains across the country, including Peebles and Bealls department stores. Gordmans, founded in Omaha, Nebraska, has found success in the Midwestern market and already owns several stores in Indiana, including in Fort Wayne, Greensburg and Clarksville, he said.

In the past year, Stage Stores has set up about 70 Gordmans locations nationwide, and the company has targeted more small-town markets like Greenfield, Hybiak said.

Gordmans will maintain a comparable assortment of shoes and apparel already available at Goody’s, Hybiak said. But customers can expect a much broader selection of home merchandise, such as decor and furnishings, and a changed storefront design, he said.

The store is already hiring, as new positions are available while the transition occurs, manager Lenzie Garver said.

Existing employees at the store will make a seamless transition to joining the Gordmans payroll, she said.
