GREENFIELD — Police are investigating a vehicle fire and an accident Monday night in which a car plowed into a house.

The vehicle fire was determined to be an arson, and police are investigating to see whether the incidents — which occurred only a short distance apart — are related.

First responders were sent to a home in the 1100 block of West Seventh Street just before 9:30 p.m. Monday after 911 calls came in about a GMC Acadia having crashed into a home in the area.

About two minutes later, a car fire was reported at a home in the 400 block of Winfield Street — about a block away from the crash site.

At the scene of the fire, police found a Chevrolet Equinox had been damaged by flames. The homeowner had extinguished the fire himself, dispatch records show.

Greenfield Police Department officers and Greenfield Fire Territory fire investigators determined the vehicle fire was intentionally set.

Additionally, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo parked outside the same home had had its tires slashed.

Witnesses told police the Acadia that had crashed into the nearby house was seen speeding away from the area of the vehicle fire seconds before the fire was discovered, according to a news release.

Around the same time the fire and crash were reported, police located the owners of the Acadia in the 100 block of Polk Avenue.

The names of those people were not released. Police say they are working to determine their involvement, if any.

Anyone with information on either incidents is asked to call 317-325-1287.
