GREENFIELD — Hancock Health, which already owns two medical fitness centers in the county, has finalized plans to purchase Family Fun & Fitness as part of its strategy to expand into southwest Hancock County.

Family Fun & Fitness, 5151 W. U.S. 40, in Sugar Creek Township, has been in business for more than 20 years. The purchase includes the sale of all equipment and membership contracts, according to a news release. Hancock Health will lease the building from owner Randy Hood. Other terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Hancock Health will take over operations of the gym in July, the news release said.

Earlier this year, Hancock Health announced plans to purchase land at the corner of County Road 600W and U.S. 52, where it will build its third wellness center along with physician offices. It is expected to open in 2020.

Hancock Health already has wellness centers in Greenfield and McCordsville. Both are Certified Medical Fitness Facilities through the Medical Fitness Association. They are among only 47 nationwide that have achieved that designation.

David Flench, director of Hancock Wellness Center, said he believes the deal is mutually beneficial.

“Operating that facility for about a year prior to our new facility opening will provide a unique opportunity for us to better understand the New Palestine community and to build relationships with the existing members of Family Fun & Fitness,” he said in the news release. “We intend to take the great foundation for fitness that they have developed over many years, continue that success, and add our medical fitness programming and expertise.”

Hood said he and his family are proud of what they have established at Family Fun & Fitness in the past 25 years and trust Hancock Health to continue the business’s path.

“My family and I are excited for the new chapter of fitness in our community to begin,” Hood said.

The Hancock Wellness Center management team will take the next few months to learn more about Family Fun & Fitness’s operations, programs, facility, members and staff as it prepares for the July 1 transition, according to the news release.

Hancock Wellness Centers highlight a balanced combination of physical activity, proper nutrition, stress management and wellness education, general manager Yvette Dixon said.

In addition to traditional fitness services and programs, the wellness centers also offer programs to help people manage chronic ailments, such as diabetes, arthritis and high blood pressure. The facilities also work with patients who have recently finished physical therapy or cardiac rehab.
