Volleyball sectional pairings announced

The IHSAA revealed its sectional pairings for the 46th annual volleyball state tournament this week.

In Class 4A, three Hancock County teams will compete in Sectional 9 at Greenfield-Central High School.

The host Cougars drew rival Mt. Vernon in the opening round to be played Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. New Palestine will face Richmond in the other opening-round match at 6 p.m. Oct. 12.

Class 2A Eastern Hancock, which hosts Sectional 42, drew a first-round bye and will play Indianapolis Howe in the semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 12:30 p.m.

Standouts picked for weekly HHC honors

Hoosier Heritage Conference Players of the Week were announced for football, soccer and volleyball. The honors are for the week of Oct. 2.

Football Players of the Week

Offense: Zach Neligh, New Palestine

•Neligh amassed 421 yards of total offense and four scores in the Dragons’ 66-21 win against Shelbyville. He had 263 yards and three touchdowns passing and 158 yards and a touchdown rushing.

Defense: Anakin Allison, Pendleton Heights

•Allison had 16 tackles as the Arabians held Delta to 174 rushing yards in a 28-13 victory.

Special teams: Luke Bumbalough, New Castle

•Bumbalough had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Trojans’ 56-36 win against Mt. Vernon. He also had four overall touchdowns on the day, including 273 receiving yards.

Volleyball Players of the Week

Gracie King, Pendleton Heights

•King had 37 kills and nine blocks in the Arabians’ three HHC matches, which included wins against Greenfield-Central and Shelbyville and a five-set loss to Delta.

Courtney Watkins, Yorktown

•Watkins had 13 kills in the Tigers’ three-set win against New Palestine, then had 36 kills in three matches as the top-ranked Tigers won three matches to take the Delaware County championship.

Boys soccer Player of the Week

Tyce Taylor, Shelbyville

•Taylor’s assist led to the Golden Bears’ 1-0 win against Pendleton Heights that clinched the HHC Victory Bell for the first time since 2011. He followed with a hat trick against Delta.

Girls soccer Player of the Week

Cleo Mills, Mt. Vernon

•In her first conference game back from an injury, Mills had three goals and an assist in the Marauders’ shootout loss to Pendleton Heights.
