National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It’s a time to celebrate the contributions of the nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
Here’s what you need to know:
1) Libraries offer digital services
The Hancock County Public Library is celebrating National Library week from April 13 to 18 with a variety of special events. This year’s theme is “Unlimited possibilities @ your library” and seeks to promote the idea that libraries are for more than just books. The library offers music downloads, DVDs, CDs and other downloadable material.
2). What’s happening?
On Friday, the library will have a Bookmobile Block Party. The community will have an opportunity to tour the new bookmobile at the Sugar Creek branch from 10 a.m. to noon, and at the Greenfield branch from 2 to 5 p.m. The Friends of the Library will host a public book sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.; and Monday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
3) Food donations wipe away fines
In honor of National Library Week, the Hancock County Public Library will accept nonperishable items to take away book fines. One item equals one dollar off fines for up to $5. Library patrons may also bring personal hygiene items and baby items, such as unopened diapers/wipes or pet items.
