From deflated footballs to Katy Perry’s hair: Betting on the big game

Just because the Colts came up a game short of Super Bowl XLIX doesn’t mean their fans should be without a rooting interest during Sunday’s big game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. Why not make the game a little more interesting by placing a few friendly wagers on some of the more exotic aspects of Sunday’s action?

That’s exactly what Daily Reporter sports editor Brian Harmon and sports writer Jim Ayello have done on three prop bets (via oddssharks.com).

Winner gets bragging rights. Loser wrestles Chad Red.

The bet: How many times will “deflated balls” be referred to during the game’s broadcast (from kickoff to end of game, not including halftime)?

The line: 2.5

The picks: Brian — Under. NBC will cover this in the pregame, but once things kick off, all chatter from Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth will be action-related.

Jim — Over: Avoiding the biggest storyline in the NFL is not something TV commentators tend to do. And if the Pats are on the verge of victory, they might be able to resist suggesting the win being tainted.

The bet: What color will Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s hoodie be?

The choices: Gray (1-2), blue (7-4), red (7-1)

The picks: Brian — Blue. Like his soul: dark and cold.

Jim— Red. Here’s what I know. The last time the Pats were in the Super Bowl, Belichick wore a red hoodie, and his team lost. Knowing him, he’ll try to prove he can conquer both the Seahawks and superstitions Sunday.

The bet: What color will halftime performer Katy Perry’s hair be?

The choices: Black/brown (2-1), pink/red (3-1), blue/green (3-1), blonde (4-1), purple (5-1).

The picks: Brian — Blue/green. My last appointment at Ye Olde Head Shoppe was circa 2003. So, I polled three female acquaintances, who surely know more about hair color (and women). Two picked blue/green, because, according to one gal, Katy Perry “is friends with the quarterback.” She meant Seattle’s Russell Wilson. The third friend predicted, “purple, because it’s the new pink.”

Jim — Purple: I know very little about Katy Perry, but I do know she likes to change up the hair color pretty often. My Google search — That’s right, I researched — reveals she currently is sporting black hair, so I’m definitely not going that direction. My guess is she’ll shy from the Super Bowl teams’ colors, yet want something glamorous. Purple is the pick.
