Francis E. Denton, age 87, of New Palestine, passed away on Friday, Dec. 23, 2011. Born on Sept. 2, 1924, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Fred and Mary (Daniels) Denton. Francis graduated from Tech High School in 1942 and married Lila Jones on Aug. 29, 1958, in Speedway, Ind. He worked for Chrysler Corp. in Indianapolis for 27 years before retiring in 1984. He was also previously self-employed in the service station business at Standard and Gulf service stations.

Francis was a veteran of the United States Navy who served during WWII as a Fire Controlman Third Class. During his service, he was awarded with the European-African Middle East Campaign Medal as well as the WWII Victory Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post #182 in New Palestine. He loved mowing his yard and keeping his place looking sharp. He also loved to feed the fish in his pond. Additionally, Francis loved scouting for baseball and over 45 years he helped 2,000 kids get scholarship money.

Surviving him are his wife, Lila Denton of New Palestine; children, Jeffery Denton, Neal Denton, and Frank (Debbie) Denton, all of New Palestine; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and siblings, Robert Denton, and Gladys Ferguson.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will take place at New Palestine Cemetery.
