Irma M. (Cron) Schaekel, age 84, of Fortville, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Regency Place in Greenfield. She was born on April 30, 1927 in Indianapolis to the late John Henry and Lena (Schramm) Cron.

As well as being an active member, Irma served as the secretary for Fortville First United Methodist Church for over 16 years. She was also active in the United Methodist Women group there. She belonged to the Eastern Star for over 25 years and also served at different times as 4-H Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and volunteered at the old Fortville Grade School and Hancock Regional Hospital.

She is survived by her husband of over 66 years, Herman William Schaekel, Jr.; son, William Edward Schaekel of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Cheryl (Stan) Palma of Indianapolis; daughter, Vickie (Eugene) Delaney of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Richard (Katherine) Schaekel of Alliance, Neb.; five beloved grandchildren, Amanda Schaekel, Devon Delaney, Jennifer Delaney, Julie Hamburger, and John Schaekel; two great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Cookie Schaekel; sister, Dorothy Ballard of Brownsburg; sisters-in-law, Selma Cron of Indianapolis and Dorothy (Denis) Menard of Cicero; and her church family.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert N. Cron and Adam “Harold” Cron; sister, Hazel Shephard, and an infant brother.

A memorial service will be held in Fortville First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at 3 pm, with the Rev. Tom Pitcher officiating.
