James Carter Toon, age 81, of Morristown, Ind., passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011. Born on Feb. 13, 1930, in Indianapolis to his late parents, Carter Harry Toon and Frances Marie (Bass) Toon.

James married Phyllis Ann (Sleeth) Toon on Sept. 3, 1954, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2005. He was formerly employed at Flasher Barricade and Light Company in Indianapolis, retiring in 1977 after 25 years of service; he was also a lifelong farmer in Shelby and Hancock Counties retiring in 1993. Mr. Toon was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, as a Sergeant in the Medical Corp. He was a member of American Legion Post 102, where he was a past Post Commander; past 10th District Commander, Morristown Masonic Lodge #931 and a former member of Morristown Order of Eastern Star Lodge #316. Mr. Toon enjoyed playing cards and checkers, fishing and mushroom hunting and he liked country and gospel music.

He is survived by his sons, Mark Henry (Dee Dee) Toon, Mike Toon, both of Morristown, Ind.; daughters, Sherri Marie (Gale) Kleiman of New Palestine, Martha Ann (Jeff) Jarman of Rushville, Ind.; brother, John (Margie) Toon of Shelbyville; brother-in-law, Bill Sleeth of Whiteland, Ind.; sister-in-law, Judy Smith of Martinsville, Ind.; grandsons, Marcus, Tony, James D., and Brandon Toon; granddaughter, Kayla Toon; Great-grandsons, Maxwell Vise, Xavier Toon; several nieces; nephews; and cousins.

James is also preceded in death by brother-in-laws, Richard Sleeth and Bob Sleeth; and grandson, Daniel Vise.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Frazier Chapel, 124 E. North Street in Morristown; with Masonic rituals at 5:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2011, at the funeral home. Mike Smith will be officiating. Interment will take place at Asbury Cemetary, with Military Graveside rites.
