ARCADIA, California — Long-shot Neveradoubt rallied to win the $200,000 Snow Chief Stakes for 3-year-olds by a half-length Saturday at Santa Anita as part of the Golden State Series, five stakes races restricted to horses bred or sired in California.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Neveradoubt ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:51.26 and paid $85.40, $30.60 and $13.40 at 41-1 odds.
Temple Keys returned $22.20 and $11.20 at 29-1 odds, while Grazen Sky was another half-length back in third and paid $3.60 to show.
Neveradoubt lagged early and angled five-wide turning for home in just his fourth career start. The victory, worth $110,000, increased Neveradoubt's career earnings to $151,350, with two wins.
"The pace was pretty fast so that's good when you're behind," Prat said. "He doesn't look like he's got a turn of foot, but he's got one pace. I didn't think I would win, but I thought we would be close."
In the $200,000 Melair Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, 4-5 favorite Sheer Pleasure romped to a 7 1/4-length victory under Tyler Baze. The winner ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.78 and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.40.
Thermodynamics returned $4.20 and $2.80, while Barbara Beatrice was another 7 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $5.20 to show.
The victory, worth $110,000, increased Sheer Pleasure's career earnings to $257,450, with three wins in five starts.
In the $150,000 Tiznow Stakes for older horses, 4-5 favorite Motown Men won by three-quarters of a length under Baze, who won three stakes Saturday. The gelding ran one mile in 1:35.77 and paid $3.80, $3 and $2.60 in earning his first stakes victory.
Spirit Rules returned $10.80 and $8.80, while Solid Wager was another two lengths back in third and returned $6 to show.
The victory, worth $90,000, increased Motown Men's career earnings to $384,459, with six wins in 29 starts.
In the $150,000 Spring Fever Stakes for older fillies and mares, Sunday Rules led all the way to win by three lengths under Baze, keeping her undefeated at 5-0. She ran six furlongs in 1:08.93 and paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10 at 1-5 odds.
Sidepocket Run returned $13.60 and $4.40 at 35-1 odds, giving trainer Phil D'Amato a 1-2 finish. Tribal Gal paid $3.40 to show.
The victory, worth $90,000, increased Sunday Rules' career earnings to $314,880.
In the $125,000 Fran's Valentine Stakes for older fillies and mares, 3-5 favorite Go West Marie won by 1 1/4 lengths while running a mile on turf in 1:38.81 under Hall of Famer Gary Stevens.
Go West Marie returned $3.40, $2.60 and $2.40. The victory, worth $75,000, increased her career earnings to $557,520, with seven wins in 20 starts.
Chati's On Top returned $5.20 and $3.40, while My Monet was another length back in third and paid $6.60 to show.
