PITTSBURGH — A western Pennsylvania man who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of his girlfriend's son has been sentenced to 6¼ to 16 2/3 years in prison.

Prosecutors withdrew other charges against 44-year-old Michael Monroe of Pittsburgh in exchange for his plea in April. Judge Jill Rangos imposed a term of 75 to 200 months Tuesday.

Authorities said Monroe argued with his girlfriend in July 2014 about "jitney trips." They allege that he attacked and choked her, then left the bedroom but returned with a bloody butcher knife and threatened her.

She said she saw her son unresponsive upstairs as she fled the home. Twenty-two-year-old Dereck Frye was pronounced dead at the scene.
