JACKSONT, Mississippi — The state Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a Gulfport man sentenced to life in prison without parole for a 2011 fatal shooting.

Sheridan Torrance Davis was convicted in Harrison County in 2013 of murder, possession of cocaine and illegal possession of a firearm.

Circuit Judge Lisa Dodson sentenced Davis to concurrent prison terms of 16 years for being found with cocaine and 10 years for being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Prosecutors say Davis shot 35-year-old Marcaris Dermaine Lowe during an argument. Prosecutors say Lowe was shot four times in the chest, abdomen and lower back Nov. 2, 2011. He died less than a month later after blood clots in his legs moved into his lungs.

Davis had argued he shot Lowe in self-defense.
