THIBODAUX, Louisiana — Lafourche Parish school officials don't expect to feel much of an impact following neighboring Terrebonne Parish's successful attempt to provide higher teacher pay through a half-cent sales tax.

Many Lafourche School Board members favor increasing teacher salaries to remain competitive but don't expect any action until after 2015.

When raises are implemented next school year, the average Terrebonne teacher will make more than the average Lafourche teacher. The average in Terrebonne is expected to be about $50,000, with starting pay at $42,000.

In Lafourche, teachers earn an average $48,000 a year, and the starting pay is $40,000.

Although discussions about raising salaries haven't begun, Lafourche board member Greg Stall tells The Courier (http://bit.ly/13X0TjE ) he expects there will be talk in the coming year.
