MONTGOMERY, Alabama — An Alabama death row inmate has died while awaiting execution.

Alabama Department of Corrections officials said in a statement that 56-year-old David Eugene Davis died early Sunday morning at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.

Officials say Davis was in the prison's infirmary and appears to have died of natural causes. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences has taken custody of the man's body.

Officials say Davis was convicted of capital murder in the 1996 deaths of Kenneth Douglas and John Fikes.

Executions have been put on hold in Alabama because of a shortage of lethal injection drugs the state uses. The Alabama House recently passed a bill that would reinstitute the electric chair if the state can't obtain chemicals used in lethal injections.
