LEXINGTON, Kentucky — Keeneland has announced one of its four annual sales, the April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, is being put on hiatus for this year.
This year's sale had been scheduled for April 6. It was first held in 1993.
Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason says the sale "lacks a critical mass of horses" and its viability will be reviewed in following years.
Last year's sale had 125 2-year-olds cataloged, with only 38 selling. The Lexington Herald-Leader said 70 were withdrawn before the sale.
The 2014 sale's average of $230,763 was 17 percent higher than the previous year, and the median of $200,000 was up 33 percent from 2013.
Keeneland's other annual sales are the September Yearling, November Breeding Stock and January Horses of All Ages.
