HALLANDALE BEACH, Florida — A South Florida man has pleaded to reduced charges related to the disappearance and death of his infant son.

As part of a deal with Broward County prosecutors, 29-year-old Calvin Melvin pleaded no contest Wednesday to three counts of giving false information to law enforcement officials. He faces up to 15 years in prison at his Sept. 18 sentencing. Melvin was scheduled to go on trial for child neglect charges.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://goo.gl/ac1oTB ) reports that the skeletal remains of 5-month-old Dontrell Melvin were discovered buried behind the family's former Hallandale Beach home in January 2013, several days after a welfare check. The child had last been seen in July 2011.

Calvin Melvin and the boy's mother, Brittney Sierra, blamed each other, but no one was ever charged with causing the child's death. Child neglect charges against Sierra were dropped in April.
