GARY, Indiana — A gunman trying to rob a Chicago-area social club sparked a gunbattle that wounded five men, including himself, police said Thursday.
Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said 23-year-old Kendell Reed of Chicago entered the Safe & Sound Senior Citizens Social Club with a gun about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and told the people there to get on the floor. Gunshots soon broke out inside the club, which is set up in what appears to be an old storefront south of downtown Gary, King said Thursday.
"He told everyone to get down on the floor and he's armed with a weapon, so those are the fruits of a robbery," King said.
The other wounded men ranged in age from 43 to 76. All five men were taken to hospitals, but police didn't detail their injuries. No charges were immediately filed.
King said she didn't know the conditions of the men who were shot. She said it would likely be Friday before charges were filed.
Gary is a city of about 79,000 people in northwestern Indiana about 25 miles southeast of Chicago.
