REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan — The mother of a 25-year-old woman killed by an ex-con fleeing police is asking why Michigan corrections officials paroled him.
Relatives say the newlywed Francesca Weatherhead had just moved to a new house in Royal Oak.
A Livonia police officer was chasing John McCallum when the home invasion suspect crashed into Weatherhead's vehicle Monday in Wayne County's Redford Township.
McCallum was arraigned Thursday on second-degree murder and other charges. His probable cause hearing is Oct. 23.
It wasn't known if he has a lawyer.
Michigan paroled the 27-year-old Detroit man in May after five years' imprisonment for home invasion.
Angela Vitale tells the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1z2hnnG ) whoever approved McCallum's release "should be held responsible."
State prisons spokesman Russ Marlan says it's "very difficult" to know which ex-cons will re-offend.
