AAA Mid-Atlantic: Despite recent increase at pump, gas prices still far lower than last year

WILMINGTON, Delaware — While motorists have seen gas prices inching up over the past few days, AAA Mid-Atlantic says drivers in every state are paying less than $3 per gallon for the first time since 2009.

The auto club says the national average price for regular unleaded on Sunday was $2.32 per gallon, up three cents from last week.

But drivers are still paying 90 cents per gallon less on average compared to last year.

West Texas Intermediate crude closed at $49.49 per barrel Friday, up $3.83 but sfar below the $85.77 price at this time last year.

Meanwhile, retail gas prices have declined 48 cents per gallon since reaching a June peak of $2.80 per gallon, and AAA says the national average could fall below $2 per gallon later this year.
