EVANSVILLE, Indiana — A southern Indiana judge has appointed two psychiatrists to evaluate a 19-year-old accused of murder whose attorney says he is considering a defense strategy of mental disease or defect.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/1txjCw3 ) public defender Jake Warrum said Thursday that the evaluation of Mason Hughes could be used at the trial and if he is convicted, at the sentencing. Hughes and 47-year-old Brenda Dossett are charged with murder in the shooting death of her estranged husband, Gilbert Dossett.

Police have described his death as a murder-for-hire scheme staged to look like a house robbery. Police say Hughes was the boyfriend of Brenda Dossett's daughter. Both face possible sentence sof life without parole if convicted.
