LANSING, Michigan — Artists who might be inspired by the rugged Upper Peninsula outdoors can apply for the Porcupine Mountains Artist-in-Residence Program.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is taking applications for this year's spring, summer and fall residencies and for winter of 2017.

The program offers writers, composers and visual and performing artists an opportunity to spend at least two weeks at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. They stay in a rustic cabin on the Little Union River and can get a three-night backcountry permit.

They give public demonstrations or talks and are required to contribute an art piece representative of their stay.

Located in the western Upper Peninsula on Lake Superior, Porcupine Mountains features 25 miles of shoreline, inland lakes, waterfalls and forests of hemlock and northern hardwoods.
