CLAYTON, Missouri — A 31-year-old police officer in a small St. Louis County department has been charged with stealing prescription drugs that had been confiscated as evidence.

County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Jeremy Quate of Belleville, Illinois with one count of stealing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

County police say Quate was charged after he was involved in a one-car accident on Saturday and transported to a local hospital, where he was found to be in possession of alprazolam without having a prescription. Alprazolam is sold under the brand name Xanax.

Quate reportedly told county detectives he took the pills from a police safe the previous day. The officer was jailed on a $10,000 bond. Online court records don't list an attorney on his behalf.
