WASHINGTON — Advertising is coming to Washington's Capital Bikeshare program.
Radio station WTOP-FM (http://bit.ly/1r9c52G ) reports the city's Department of Transportation has accepted a five-year $3.6 million offer from Van Wagner Communications LLC to place advertisements on the Capital Bikeshare advertising display panels.
Under the terms of the deal, the city will get $1 million up front. Van Wagner has promised a minimum of $231 per month for each of the 190 existing Capital Bikeshare advertising panels. The city expects to have more than 260 Capital Bikeshare stations by 2016.
Van Wagner also leads bike share advertising programs in Boston and Chicago. If Washington decides to renew Van Wagner's contract in 2019 for an additional five years the city will get another $1 million.
Capital Bikeshare counts more than 22,000 people as members.
