BARNSTABLE, Massachusetts — A Barnstable man has pleaded guilty to motor vehicle homicide in connection with a car crash that killed his friend.

The Cape Cod Times (http://bit.ly/1xfH3Jm ) reports that Richard Gannon was sentenced Tuesday to 2½ years in jail with one year to serve and the balance suspended during five years of probation.

Three related charges — operating under the influence, operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury and negligent operation — were merged with the motor vehicle homicide charge.

Authorities say the 22-year-old Gannon was driving in the early morning hours last Oct. 19 when he lost control of the car and hit several trees and a utility pole before skidding onto the lawn of a home.

One of his passengers, 22-year-old Andrew Hurd, died at the hospital.
