DELANO, California — California authorities say an inmate has died at a prison in the Central Valley and his cellmate is considered a suspect.
The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Tuesday that 63-year-old Donald Cook was found unresponsive in his cell at North Kern State Prison on Sunday.
He had visible injuries and was pronounced dead after he was taken to an outside hospital.
Prison officials and the Kern County district attorney's office are investigating the death as a homicide.
They identified 34-year-old Rory Moser as a suspect. He is serving a nearly three-year sentence from Sacramento County for driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury.
The victim was serving a nearly three-year sentence from Los Angeles County for repeated petty theft.
The prison houses nearly 4,900 inmates.
