SOUTH GATE, California — A carjacking suspect surrendered to police after barricading himself in a house for about five hours in South Gate.
Police Capt. Darren Arakawa says he surrendered at 3 p.m. Monday after hours of successful work by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's crisis negotiation team.
Arakawa says people will be allowed access to the block, which was evacuated, within about an hour. He says police are continuing to search the home and their investigation continues.
Officers had the home under surveillance at about 10 a.m. when there were volleys of rounds fired from the inside to the outside.
Arakawa says investigators believe the suspect knew police were outdoors. No one was injured.
