SALINAS, California — A former professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey says he was insane when he shot and dismembered his ex-wife.
The Monterey County Herald (http://bit.ly/1t5E9qJ ) says 72-year-old Lawrence Jones entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
A judge said Tuesday that she'll appoint two experts next month to evaluate his mental state. If he's found insane, Jones could face life in a mental hospital.
Jones was arrested about two years ago after the remains of Norife Herrera were found scattered beside a road in San Benito County, days after the couple finalized their divorce.
Police say Jones used a shotgun to kill the 29-year-old in their Monterey home.
