FRANKFORT, Kentucky — Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed an adviser to House Speaker Greg Stumbo to fill a vacancy on the state Supreme Court.

Beshear appointed David Allen Barber to replace Will T. Scott.

Scott resigned in January so he could seek the Republican nomination for governor.

Barber was a Court of Appeals judge from 2000 to 2007. He is a policy and legal adviser to Stumbo.

Barber will represent the 7th judicial circuit, which covers 22 counties in eastern Kentucky.

Barber will serve the rest of Scott's unexpired term until voters select a replacement. Barber did not file to run for the seat. Court of Appeals Judge Janet Stumbo and Letcher County Circuit Court Judge Sam Wright are running for the seat.
