TUCSON, Arizona — Authorities say a Douglas man has been arrested for trying to smuggle dozens of packages of marijuana in the gas tank of his pickup truck.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the truck was stopped Thursday morning east of Tucson for a traffic violation.

DPS says one of their drug-sniffing canines alerted officers to a possible presence of drugs near the gas tank.

The truck was taken to DPS Tucson headquarters where officers found 56 packages of marijuana.

Authorities say the packages amounted to about 78 pounds of marijuana, worth a street value of $39,000.

The driver, 37-year-old Arsenio Rodriguez-Convarrubias, was subsequently placed under arrest.

He has been booked into Pima County Jail on charges of marijuana possession and transportation of marijuana for sale.
