CASTRO VALLEY, California — A 20-year-old Northern California man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing a Castro Valley woman and setting fire to her house during a burglary.

The Oakland Tribune reports ( Cody Nicosia was sentenced Thursday. He was found guilty of all charges in the murder of 58-year-old Barbara Latiolais after just a half day of deliberations.

Latiolais was brutally beaten and strangled inside her Castro Valley home, which was set on fire after the October 2012 attack.

Nicosia told investigators he and a friend decided to kill the woman because they got tired of waiting for her to leave the house so they could rob it.

The murder trial for his accomplice, Christian Birdsall, is expected to begin in April.
