PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The unemployment rate in Rhode Island fell to 5.9 percent in June, marking the first time since 2007 that the jobless rate has stood below 6 percent.

The state Department of Labor and Training on Thursday said the unemployment rate fell one-tenth of a percentage point from the previous month. The rate has fallen 1.8 percentage points since June 2014, when the rate stood at 7.7 percent.

The department previously said the rate in May stood at 5.9 percent, but revised that number to 6 percent.

Rhode Island had one of the worst unemployment rates in the nation for years and only recently has improved relative to other states.

The national unemployment stood at 5.3 percent in June, six-tenths of a percentage point lower than in Rhode Island.
