REDDING, California — Sheriff's officials say one person died when a small plane crashed into a field in Northern California.

The victim was not immediately identified. The Record Searchlight of Redding reports (http://bit.ly/1DYfVUn) that the crash occurred about 20 miles east of Redding in Shasta County on Saturday morning.

Sheriff's officials responded to a report of an explosion and found a small debris field at the site.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer tells the Record Searchlight the Cessna 206 was believed to have departed from the Redding area, but its destination was not clear.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
