WASHINGTON — The head of the president's drug policy efforts will speak at the graduation of six people from a drug court in Washington.

Michael Botticelli, the Director of National Drug Control Policy, will be speaking Wednesday at D.C. Superior Court. He'll be talking to the graduates of drug court, a program designed to help nonviolent substance-abusing defendants. Eligible participants can have their cases transferred to drug court in place of the traditional criminal justice system.

In drug court, participants get treatment and other services designed to keep them clean and sober. A judge reviews their progress and holds them accountable for meeting obligations including drug testing.

Botticelli was sworn in to his current position in February. He previously served both as Acting Director and Deputy Director of National Drug Control Policy.
