LINCOLN, Nebraska — Nebraska's preliminary unemployment rate held steady at 3.6 percent in August but registered four-tenths of a point under the rate a year ago, the Nebraska Labor Department said Friday.

"August marks a year that the unemployment rate has been below 4 percent," acting Labor Commissioner John Albin said. "This is the first time Nebraska has achieved this milestone since the end of the recession."

The new Nebraska figure remained well below the preliminary national unemployment rate of 6.1 percent in August, which was a tenth of a point below the revised July figure of 6.2 percent. South Dakota had the nation's lowest rate last month — 2.8 percent — and Nebraska's 3.6 percent was matched by South Dakota and Utah, the U.S. Labor Department said.

Last month, Nebraska listed 36,912 people as unemployed, compared with 36,914 in July and 40,673 in August 2013. There were 1,017,742 people in the state labor force last month, the report said, compared with 1,020,727 in July.

Omaha's preliminary unemployment rate dropped to 3.8 percent in August, down four-tenths of a point from July and down three-tenths of a point from 4.1 percent in August 2013. Lincoln's rate also dropped four-tenths of a point in August, to 3 percent from 3.4 percent in July. The new figure is two-tenths of a point under the August 2013 rate of 3.2 percent.

The unemployment rates for Lincoln and Omaha are not seasonally adjusted, so they cannot be directly compared with the state unemployment rate.

Here are all preliminary area labor market unemployment rates for August, followed by the revised July rates:
