GARY, Indiana — One of the last obstacles to an expansion of Gary/Chicago International Airport has been removed.

The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/1u0O5E3 ) work crews began ripping up a section of Canadian National Railway tracks Monday and connecting remaining tracks to a new line that loops around the projected runway expansion.

By Tuesday night, Canadian National trains should be riding on new tracks that take them around the airport. By late November, work should begin on demolishing a berm separating the airport's existing 7,000-foot runway so it can be connected with a new section forming a runway 8,900 feet long. The project is expected to be completed by June.

The expanded runway will be able to accommodate larger aircraft and possibly open up service into new markets.
