MANDAN, North Dakota — A Mandan man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he assaulted a police officer during a domestic violence investigation.

The Bismarck Tribune reports ( ) that 39-year-old James Messmer entered not guilty pleas to felony assault of a peace officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Authorities say Messmer allegedly tackled the officer on Oct. 12 and the two fell down a set of steps.

The officer subdued Messmer with a stun gun.
