SPARTANBURG, South Carolina — A former Spartanburg High School teacher has been sentenced to three years' probation on an assault and battery charge after being accused of inappropriately touching one of her students.

Local media outlets report that 31-year-old Courtney C. Kay was sentenced Wednesday in Spartanburg County Circuit Court to five years in prison, suspended to three years of probation. Kay had pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault and battery.

She was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 16 in February 2013. A 14-year-old student had said that Kay kissed him, touched him and sent him thousands of text and instant messages as part of an ongoing relationship.

Judge Keith Kelly says he has not yet decided whether Kay will be placed on the state's sex offender registry.
