CROWN POINT, Indiana — The attorney for a man charged in the killing of a Gary policeman complained at a pre-trial hearing Wednesday that his client has been denied access to a law library, paper and reading material in the Lake County Jail.

Carl Blount, 26, of Gary faces a possible death sentence is he's convicted of murder in the July 6 shooting death of Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield. Blount has pleaded not guilty.

Lake Superior Court Judge Samuel Cappas previously issued an order allowing Blount access to the jail's law library. On Wednesday, Blount's lawyer, Richard Wolter, said jail officers haven't taken him there, The (Munster) Times reported (http://bit.ly/1zN7gCX ).

Cappas issued another order permitting Blount access to the law library.

The judge said he was not familiar with the jail's policies on allowing paper in jail cells. Wolter said the defense team was checking into whether the jail has any written protocols prohibiting inmates from having paper in their cells.

"They don't want him to have any paper," Wolter said.

Blount attended the hearing surrounded by four Lake County correctional officers. Blount's relatives sat in the crowded court gallery. A couple of people there wore navy T-shirts memorializing Westerfield with images of his police badge and squad car.

Police say Westerfield, 47, was shot in his squad car as he searched for Blount, who was a suspect in a domestic disturbance.

Wolter said the defense team was reviewing the state's evidence, which includes ballistic testing and a DNA submission.

Blount is expected to reappear in court Jan. 21 for another pretrial hearing.
