NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, Ohio — A Newburgh Heights police officer has been hospitalized and released after a collision with another driver that closed a section of Interstate 77 for hours.
Media outlets report that 41-year-old Shawn Finch was on patrol around 6:30 p.m. Friday along I-77 northbound near Fleet Avenue when his cruiser was struck by a pickup truck traveling fast. The cruiser spun around and the pickup flipped.
Finch was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, and released Saturday. Police Chief John Majoy said he's expected to fully recover.
The identity and condition of the driver of the pickup were not released. Alcohol is being investigated as a factor in the crash.
The Plain Dealer reported that Finch joined the department in the spring of 2014 and is an Iraq war veteran.
