WASHINGTON, Louisiana — A 27 year-old Washington area woman has been booked with two counts of attempted first-degree murder after her parents were shot.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz tells The Advertiser (http://tinyurl.com/mvc9mus ) Jamie Kristen Fontenot's 59-year-old father and 58-year-old mother were taken to a nearby hospital following Wednesday night's shooting.

The sheriff says Fontenot's father had undergone surgery for one gunshot to his chest. He's listed in critical condition.

Her mother, who had been shot twice, was treated and released.

Guidroz says deputies found Fontenot calmly sitting on the front porch with a loaded and cocked handgun.

"She was just sitting there waiting for the deputies to arrive. They were able to safely take her into custody without incident," Guidroz said. "Thank God she didn't resist. That could have been tragic for her and our deputies."

He said neighbors told investigating officers that Fontenot and her twin brother had been adopted by the couple when they were infants. "That is what we've been told, but we can't confirm that," Guidroz said.

Capt. Megan Vizena with the sheriff's office said Fontenot's motive remains unclear and the investigation continues.

"She is not talking, but our detectives feel confident they have enough information to justify the attempted first-degree murder charges," Vizena said.

It was unclear whether Fontenot has an attorney.
