CHICAGO — The city of Chicago has selected a 57-foot Colorado blue spruce from an Elgin family's front yard to serve as the annual Christmas tree on Daley Plaza.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office plans to officially announce the selection Wednesday.

The Atkinson family has nominated the tree for the past three years and it was always a runner-up, until this year.

The tree will be cut down on Thursday and delivered Friday to Chicago where it will undergo a holiday transformation. It will be ready for the annual tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 25.

The Christmas tree will be on display at Daley Plaza through Jan. 6.
